Terry Watt was born December 20, 1940; he lost his battle with lung cancer suddenly on February 4, 2010 at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. Terry was predeceased by his wife Joannie and is survived by his daughter Llana, son-in-law Kelly and granddaughters Lauren and Sidney all of Blackie, Alberta.
Terry was a gentleman, a snowmobiler, an ATVer, a hunter, a hiker, a fisherman, and a horseman. He was honest, demanding, passionate and kind. Some people that Terry had a conversation with may have disagreed with Terry but all respected him. Terry had a photographic memory and was a speed reader; if he did not know about something, he would know a lot in a day or two.
Terry was not just a friend he was a mentor, he was a complex, disciplined, private man. He loved the mountains, the trails, the wildlife and the people. Over the five years I knew the man there were not many days that we did not converse and when his number came up on the call display I knew that it would be a couple of hours of Terry discussing and bouncing ideas off me, I also knew I was going to learn something. There are certainly others that were close to Terry and would receive his lengthy phone calls; how he did everything I have never figured out. Terry would often speak fondly of the various people he was working with in government and from snowmobile clubs. The only time he was frustrated was when people were playing “games” or simply were incapable of grasping ideas he was offering up.
Terry was one of the founders of our organization. At the first meeting at the Roe Lake Hall in August 2006 in the Caribou where the original thirteen clubs met, Terry consented to be our first President. Terry led the Association of BC Snowmobile Clubs for three years stepping down to the position of Secretary for this year. Terry was driven, he worked twelve hour days, six days a week, on behalf of our member Clubs. Terry was instrumental in shaping many of the policies and practices of ABCSC; the first and last question to be asked before a decision was made is “Is this in the best interest of our member Clubs”. Terry believed that if we could help our Clubs become successful then ABC SC would be successful, we serve at the pleasure of our member Clubs, it has become what we are all about.
Terry never wanted any personal notoriety for his work, but he always demanded recognition of ABC Snowmobile Clubs. We at ABC SC owe much to Terry. Terry cannot be replaced, but he has set ABCSC on an illuminated path, he called it the high road. We are determined to keep ABC SC on this path and do our work in a manner that would make Terry smile. We are sure now that Terry is with his beloved wife Joannie probably sledding in the sky. We miss him so much, rest in peace Terry.
